About Us

Taiwan Learning Yoga Association is a national organization founded by yoga teachers and practitioners with the purpose of promoting yoga for the elderly and improving their physical and mental health. They regularly organize training and research on yoga for the elderly, cultivating qualified yoga teachers to help communities offer yoga courses for the elderly. The word "Learning" is a homophonic translation from the Chinese word "樂齡 Le Ling" and "Le" implies "happy" and "comfortable," expressing the hope that yoga can bring happy and comfortable health to more elderly people.

Taiwan has entered an aging society since 2018, with the proportion of people over 65 accounting for 14%, and it is estimated that by 2025, it will become an ultra-aging society, with the proportion of people over 65 accounting for 20%. This means that more and more elderly people will face aging problems.

Aging is an inevitable phenomenon in life. The aging of the respiratory system leads to a decrease in lung function, while in the aging process of the musculoskeletal system, osteoporosis, degenerative arthritis, slow reactions, and falls and fractures may occur. In addition to the damage to quality of life caused by illness and pain, it also puts a huge burden on the entire medical system, and long-term care services may become even more inadequate.

A master's thesis mentioned an experiment that yoga improved the physical condition of the elderly. 68 elderly people aged 60 and above with mild cognitive impairment participated in yoga training three times a week for 55 minutes each time. After 12 weeks, their breathing rate, vital capacity, cardiopulmonary endurance, sitting forward bend, shoulder flexibility, handgrip strength, muscle endurance of the upper and lower limbs, activity of the shoulder and hip joints, single-leg standing balance, and walking speed all significantly improved.

Another study from Miami University in the United States designed a course on endurance and yoga for a group of elderly people aged 60 to 79. They attended the course three times a week for six weeks, and the results found that yoga effectively improved their muscle strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance. The breathing, stress relief, and relaxation techniques taught in yoga also improved their quality of life.
